Photographer's Note

Vatheia is a small village on the southern edge of the Mani peninsula (Peloponnese). The first mention is dated back to the 16th century, it was a village inhabited by pirates. On the hills and mountain sides around Vatheia are clusters of abandoned houses, towers and chapels. In my photo you can see the tower houses, in the 19th century they were small fortresses for the warring clans, about 100 men were killed during the clan wars, women were not allowed to left these houses, otherwise they were abducted, their role was to give birth to "shotguns", meaning boys who would revenge on an enemy clan.

Photo taken from the vantage point at the road to the Cape Tenaro (Matapan).
