The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Greek: Μνημείο του Αγνώστου Στρατιώτη, romanized: Mnimío tou Agnóstou Stratióti) is a war memorial located in Syntagma Square in Athens, in front of the Old Royal Palace. It is a cenotaph dedicated to the Greek soldiers killed during war. It was sculpted between 1930 and 1932 by sculptor Fokion Rok.Ο Τάφος είναι στη γαλλική αστική και κλασική παράδοση, σε συνδυασμό με το σύγχρονο πνεύμα του Art Deco και με συμβολικές αναφορές στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα.
The Tomb is in the French urban and classical tradition, combined with the modern spirit of Art Deco and with symbolic references to Ancient Greece. The main issue was the integration of the Tomb with Syntagma Square and with the neoclassical Palace and the contribution to the redevelopment of the square.
The Tomb is a large-scale Π-shaped retaining wall of limestone. The sculpture is at the centre of the wall. To the left and to the right there are two side staircases while in the centre there is a rectangular raised grave. The stairs of the monuments are purely decorative, as the steps are for observation during ceremonies.
The sculpture represents the naked male figure of a dead warrior lying on the ground. He holds a circular shield in his left hand and wears an Ancient Greek-style helmet. The representation of the body gives the impression that the Unknown Soldier is ready to arise at any moment.
To the left and right of the sculpture are phrases from the works of Thucydides. To the left, "ΜΙΑ ΚΛΙΝΗ ΚΕΝΗ ΦΕΡΕΤΑΙ ΕΣΤΡΩΜΕΝΗ ΤΩΝ ΑΦΑΝΩΝ" ("There's one empty bier made up for the unidentified [fallen] ones"); to the right, "ΑΝΔΡΩΝ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΩΝ ΠΑΣΑ ΓΗ ΤΑΦΟΣ" ("The whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men"). Both are quotes from History of the Peloponnesian War. Over the main sculpture in smaller writing, one reads "ΕΙΣ ΑΦΑΝΗ ΣΤΡΑΤΙΩΤΗ" ("To an unknown soldier").
The names of battles where many Greek lives were lost in recent history are written into the limestone walls around the sculpture.
Side view, showing the steps with inscribed locations
To the left of the monument, descending by the steps, are inscribed the names of battle locations of the First and Second Balkan War and World War I: Elassona, Sarantaporo, Lazarades, Porta Pass, Katerini, Sorovich, Yenidje, Thessaloniki, Ostrovon and Korytsa, Pesta, Gribovo, Pente Pigadia, Preveza, Aetorrachi, Manoliassa, Bizani, Driskos, Kilkis–Lachanas, Belles, Kresna-Tsoumagia, Petsovo, Nevrokopi, Banitsa, Machomea, Golobilo, Sborsko, Preslap, Erigon, Ravine, Monastiri, Skra, Strymon, Doiran, Belles, Grankorone and Tzena.
To the right of the monument, descending by the steps, are inscribed the names of battle locations of the Russian Civil War and Greco-Turkish War: Cherson, Sermikas, Odissos, Sevastoupolis, Artaki, Aidinio, Proussa, Philadelphia, Toumlou Bunar, Koutacheia, Dorilaion, Afyonkarahisar, Sangarios and Kale-Groto.
To the left and right of the figure of the dead soldier are the names of battle locations of World War II and later engagements in which Greeks died: Pindus, Morova, Korytsa, Kalamas, Tomoros, Trebeshina, Cheimarra, Argyrokastron, (Hill) 731, Boubesi, Kalpaki, Kleisoura, Premeti, Ostrovitsa, Pogradec, Roupel, Perithori, Crete, El Alamein, Rimini, Roubikonas, Dodecanese, Korea and Cyprus

An extremely well balanced photo but your description is superb. I think we forget what a big part the Greeks have played in helping defeat those who wished to destroy us, especially World Wars 1 and 2. Thanks for reminding us.

Hello Costantino,
It's a fine composition with perfect symmetry, and it's very well exposed. You cropped it neatly, except that it was a bit tight on the sides. You hurt their fingertips! ;-)
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Costantino,
In addition to the traditional clothing van the soldiers, the posture of the two on the left and right determines the value of this interesting photo.
A strange posture with the arms spread like windmill sails and the rifle pointing straight up.
I almost forget to look like the monument for the unknown soldier.
Well done
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hello Costantino,
This is the most symmetrical photo I ever saw of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens.
In between the evzons we can nicely read the texts on the wall (for those who understand Greek of course).
Excellent timing!
Best regards, Paul

Hello Costantino,
Good symmetry with the soldiers either side acting as bookends to the trio in the centre. I have been there & it's not so easy to get a good shot. Timing is everything. Tfs!

Costantino, their kilt like clothes, their red hats, their special shoes make these guards original. Excellent capture during a parade. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hello dear Costantino.
You captured a great moment of the Evzones' changing of the guard, in front of Parliament, with the three in the center rifle on their shoulders and the two on the sides raising the rifle with their hand.
Very effective coloring, which highlights the details of the image.
Very well done. I like it.
Enjoy the weekend.
My best wishes for you.

Hi Costantino,
I have just returned from my short visit to Athens last week.
I am still processing my photos. I have of course as well watched the change of the guards there again.
I will find some photos hopefully of that for TrekEarth.
I was a bit disappointed seeing the soldiers in the black coats because I think the white are more attractive but I see you had the same here and it does not look bad at all.
You have captured the evzones at the perfect pose! Perfectly symmetrical and so dramatic, expressive.
Excellent reportage,
M

Hello Costantino,
This is a nice, cultural scene, with good symmetry. I like the traditional clothes, and the poses of the two guards on the sides. Maybe you could have stepped back a little more to include the tiny bit of their hands that were cut off, but that's a small issue. :-) Take care!
