Photographer's Note
These photos express my feelings on this long burned road across the Ilia prefecture. It’s very sad, especially for my Greek friends. But don’t forget one important thing: the high ability of Mediterranean pine forests to regenerate (resilience toward fire). The biggest danger comes from some humans… So, don’t give up!
That is why I choose the colours version to show the little green grass a sign of hope.
Some facts. More than two-thirds of Ilia (40,000 hectares or 99,000 acres) burned during the fires that have ravaged the Peloponnesus peninsula for August 2007. On the 67 people killed in Greece, 45 were in Ilia. There was also in the prefecture about 3.500 homeless and 25,000 dead animals.
More info here and here.

Hi Catherine, Thank you so much for posting this emotional picture. I was absolutely devastated to see this beautiful country going up in flames. Your picture shows that even in the face of such total distruction, this proud land is healing it's wounds. It will be a long recovery for the town, countryside and animals. I am sure the Greeks have the courage to stand up against the developers. I read your links and I am ashamed my country did nothing to help.

Good morning Catherine,
What a capture! Excellent. What is left after the marsh of the fire? A tin tabernacle and the empty hands of these trees paying towards the God... But, the new green leaves already appears, hope for tomorrow..
Best regards
Michael

Catherine bon jour
Another shot with the same theme but equally dramatic and heart shattering that brings back memories of last summer's nightmare we all lived

WOW This photo describes even the gods abundance for help, a very strong photo well composed, and desaturated selection of the colour make it more dramatic

Dear Catherine
I am very glad to have found your site - you have some truly excellent shots. Many of your photos are taken in parts of Greece which some people will not know - and at times of year when there are not many visitors. This makes them even more interesting.
This shot describes the desolate feel of the burned area very well - it must have been distressing to travel through it. The burned - out shrine is a moving addition to the sad scene.
We must hope that the wrong people are not allowed to profit from the disaster and that the arsonists are not seen to be rewarded.
Best wishes Maggie
