Photographer's Note

Ercolano is better known as Herculaneum in English. It was obliterated by the lahar mud flows of the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In the fg are the excavated ruins of the old city with modern Ercolano city perched atop the 20 - 28 metre solidified mudflow in the bg.

The city is easily reached from Naples by private train line 'Circum-Vesuvio', which is downstairs from the public 'Trena Italia' tracks at street level.
