Photographer's Note

This is one of the largest surviving frescoes in Herculaneum ('Ercalano' in Italian). It takes up an entire wall and is located in the College of the Augustales, a building dedicated to the cult of Emperor worship (Augustus). It survived the 79 AD eruption of nearby Vesuvius which covered the town in 22 metres of lahar mud flows which changed the coastline. More info & photos here:
