Photographer's Note

'Ercalano' is the Italian name for Herculaneum, one of several cities devoured by lahars and pyroclastic flows during the violent eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. There are a couple of tourists in the shadows at left. The historic site is small and generally uncrowded, in stark contrast to Pompeii, which is huge and full of package tourists. More info here:
