Photographer's Note
Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was overwhelmed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. "The House of the Gem was named after a piece of jewellery found there. The jewellery dates from the Claudian period and bares the engraved effigy of Livia."

The 3 white discs were originally placed as talismans, to ward off evil. They are marble “oscilla,” masks in the Dionysian theme, and served a similar function to the the practice today in Turkey of using a blue and white “nazar boncugu,” to repel evil. In Greece it is known as the μάτι (mati), "eye". More information on the talismans, the evil eye and its alleged power to kill with looks alone here:

Bonjour, cher Chris,
Ces gemmes ont assuré leur rôle dans un certain sens puisque cette partie a été "sauvée" !
Très intéressante composition ainsi que la note.
Amitiés.

Hi Chris
I've only been to Pomeii. If I'm ever in that region again Heculaneum is on my list. Places like this building tend to have tricky light but you managed enough detail in the shaded area for us to see.
Cheers

Hello Chris,
Interesting note to accompany this well realised composition. The slightly oblique point of view and the repeating columns serve to give the image depth and perspective. Excellent warm/cool tonal contrasts and very good sharpness.

Hello Chris,
The colours make more impression than the actual building, although it's amazing that it could be so well preserved after so many years buried under the ashes. The red and orange tones give us an idea of the spectacular views that must have welcomed visitors to Roman towns 2000 years ago. In this photo it's also the deep blue sky and the deep green trees that strike me.
Regards,
Gert

Bonjour Chris,
J'apprécie le jeu d'ombres sur le mur. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails des ruines. La lumière met en valeur la beauté des couleurs. Bonne journée.

Hi Chris,
I had to make tough choices over there: I couldn't really drag my family to another huge open air museum so I have seen just Pompeii although I heard that Herculaneum had someadvantages like better preserved frescos etc.
I have to revisit I suppose or for now I have to enoy you reportage.
Fantastic composition with the two layers contrastingso wellwith each other. The upper one being so colorful with greatly polarized sky and vivid green vegetation.
Fantastic way to show it!

Ciao Chris
un luogo molto interessante che purtroppo non ho mai visitato....dovrò rimediare.
Eccellente inquadratura, i dischi e le loro ombre accendono la curiosità.
Bei colori, ottima qualità.
Saluti

here we can see as the structure of these columns were made to resemble like marble. I presume colors are original, but I am not sure if they would face the sun for much more time. nice view with the pine tree above.
take care

Hello Chris,
I am used to the marble columns, these painted ones made out of bricks look interesting but cheap to me. I like the stone pines rising above the building against the deep blue sky. 👍👍

MT
