Photographer's Note

I wish I knew the names of these houses! You just see them walking by and take photos of them without searching around for the small plaques that sometimes have the names. Anyway, this was something of a difficult shot; I wanted to get the fresco in the background and the white marble of the atrium in the foreground while keeping the frame within the three walls, so the perspective ended up somewhat crooked. I cropped so there was just the barest hint of blue sky above. This house has probably been somewhat reconstructed, but not much as the white marble feature seen here is still standing in the open. These were typical features in ancient Roman houses; they were decorative but were also used to collect rainwater, which would come in through a hole in the roof.
