Oggi è difficile da credere, eppure nel Medioevo a Roma si contarono fino a trecento torri contemporaneamente che, insieme ai campanili delle chiese e alle torri delle Mura Aureliane, conferirono alla città un aspetto verticalizzato, spinoso. In una guida medioevale di Roma per pellegrini, scritta dall'erudito inglese Mastro Gregorio (XII secolo), si trova la più bella definizione della Roma turrita: «Si deve ammirare con straordinario entusiasmo il panorama di tutta la città, in cui sono così numerose le torri da sembrare spighe di grano». Oltre trecento torri: questo dato è ancora più impressionante qualora si pensi che la città medioevale era assai più piccola di quella di oggi, tutta ritratta verso il fiume sia per l'approvvigionamento di acqua (gli acquedotti erano caduti in rovina); sia per la sicurezza difensiva; sia per lo sfruttamento della corrente con mulini.
La costruzione di una torre era un privilegio consentito soltanto all'aristocrazia, in quanto simbolo del diritto feudale; e la casatorre - che in pratica è una torre con funzioni abitative - divenne il modello d'abitazione più diffuso per la nobiltà. Solo con il sec. XV le torri andarono scomparendo, con l'affermarsi del palazzo di tipo toscano. Delle centinaia di torri attestate a Roma in età medievale, ne sono rimaste una cinquantina: alcune piuttosto famose perché isolate e ben visibili, la maggior parte invece sconosciute, inglobate in edifici posteriori o mimetizzate tra le costruzioni che ad esse si sono addossate.
