Fountain of the Lake or of the Horses - Trevi
It is located in Piazza Garibaldi, the dual denomination of this fountain derives from the original presence of a large pond to defend the walls in their most vulnerable point, still present in the 18th century and therefore from the custom, still alive until a few decades ago, of wash your clothes and water horses and pack animals, tied to the bells of the retaining wall.
Originally fed by the medieval aqueduct, it is documented at least at the beginning of the fifteenth century. It owes its current appearance to an intervention in 1883. The architectural façade, surmounted by the coat of arms of the city, consists of a niche with a mask from which, through a double cannula, the water flows into the monolithic basin, supported by a column, decorated with the coats of arms of the Varano and ending with four lion protomes, elements that perhaps come from the fourteenth-century fountain that was located in the main square of the city. On the sides of the basin, two smaller basins, which in the eighteenth century, when it was decided to fill the "lake" in front of the fountain, were used as a wash house and trough for horses.

Hello Silvio,
Above the simple but elegant fountain we see lots of wonderful red flowers and a thick foliage of trees. The beauty of the architecture and nature is enhanced by a very attractive warm light. It's a perfectly sharp photo, and if I could possibly ask for anything else it would have been an old lady resting her legs on the bench. Maybe your camera scared her away. ;-)

Les arbres cadrent bien la fontaine. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de la fontaine du Lac des chevaux. La lumière met en valeur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hello Silvio,
An excellent photo of this fountain. The sunlight was perfect and added such a nice and warm hue to the old wall. The inclusion of the trees in the upper right hand side is also excellent.

Ciao Caro Silvio,

I am constantly made aware of the importance of street water supplies, before water was pumped into houses; though it would be a catastrophe if the water source became contaminated!

The coat of arms was a proud reminder of how the city was responding to the needs of the people. It adds a certain importance to the fountain, which is situated directly beneath it.
It's a fine exposure, with added interest from the overhanging flowers.

I like the warm honey colours of the sunlit fountain and its retaining walls. Good sharpness and the red leafed tree at left adds a lovely splash of Autumn colours. Tfs!

these are great subjects, we just don't have these over here in North America. so interesting too, how they're fed through an aqueduct, such brilliant engineering. lovely golden warm tones, and the stone has held up so well over the years. love it
