Photographer's Note
A pcituresque 'soldier' taken during the annual reenactment of the Battle of Magenta last June.
''The Battle of Magenta was fought on June 4, 1859 during the Second Italian War of Independence, resulting in a French-Sardinian victory under Napoleon III against the Austrians under Marshal Ferencz Gyulai.
It took place near the town of Magenta in northern Italy on June 4, 1859. Napoleon III's army crossed the Ticino River and outflanked the Austrian right forcing the Austrian army under General Gyulay to retreat. The close nature of the country, a vast spread of orchards cut up by streams and irrigation canals, precluded elaborate maneuver. The Austrians had turned every house into a miniature fortress. The brunt of the fighting was borne by 5,000 grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard, still in the First Empire style uniform. The battle of Magenta was not particularly large, but it was a decisive victory for the French-Sardinian forces. Patrice Maurice de MacMahon was created Duke of Magenta for his role in this battle, and later served as President of the French Republic.
The Franco-Piedmontese coalition consisted in overwhelming majority of French troops (1,100 Piedmontese and 58,000 French). Their victory can therefore be considered as mostly a French victory.
The colour magenta, discovered in 1859, was named after this battle, as was the Boulevard de Magenta in Paris''

Bonjour ALessandro,
Ce qui me frappe le plus dans cette photo est le regards de cet homme qui semble comme empli de regret et d'amertume. C'est comme pour mieux dire que toute guerre n'est que perte et douleur.
Très belle composition.
Très cordialement
Hicham

Hello Alessandro,
You have really shown the excellent use of narrow dof. The soldier is perfectly sharp, revealing the details of his costume and ordanace, whilst the b/g is unobtrusive, yet useful.
Love how you have composed the shot with the rifle on a diagonal and the soldier's eyes strongly positioned on the 'thirds' line.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Buona sera Alessandro,
This what we call a "Character", even without his colorful costume - he is a "subject" to photo.
The uniform added vivid elements to his portrait.
Well spotted.

Hello Alessandro,
Like yourself, I love seeing battle re-enactments such as this! And this is a splendid portrait of this "soldier" in his battle gear and holding his musket with fixed bayonet.
Your use of a fairly long lens and a wide aperture has limited your depth of field and made this character stand out beautifully against a nicely out of focus background. Otherwise that background would have been very distracting.
Gorgeous rich colours, good composition, perfect light and exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. Do you know if this man was on the French-Sardinian side or was he an Austrian?
