Appecano - Terni - Umbria
Appecano is part of the municipality of Terni (TR), located at 572 m above sea level, in the territory of Valserra, inhabited by no more than 30 people.
The origin of Appecano dates back to Roman times, according to epigraphic evidence found during the centuries. Its name may derive from a certain Appaeus or Appeius landowner. Unlike other settlements in the valley, Appecano no signs of defensive structures or surrounding walls, but its arrangement is designed as a "villa" that is a set of rural houses constructed nearby, in a much less rational than the castle settlements. It is assumed that the town has developed around the original church, made up of a series of small houses arranged in a ring around a public space, ancient place "social" in the country.
Example of art to Appecano is the Church of San Martino which was founded during the eleventh century, although over the centuries has undergone a number of changes; It is still in the '700 that takes on the appearance of today. In 1917 a strong earthquake hit the town of Appecano, and it was necessary a drastic intervention of consolidation for the church and parish houses.
Although the first mention of the church dates back to the fifteenth century, by type and materials it can be traced back to centuries IX - X. The original structure, of modest size, a unique ship with semicircular apse and the bell tower in front, was enlarged with the construction of a second aisle during the seventeenth century. Even the bell tower, damaged by the 1703 earthquake, was rebuilt. The paintings of the interior is in poor condition. Of note some fragments of marble with inscriptions of Roman reused in the wall of the facade.
