Church of the Eschio - Valentano
The Church, located outside the town of Valentano, is today in a complete state of neglect, with the windows and roof broken.
Legend has it that a tile with the painted Sacred Image of the Virgin was found hanging from the trunk of a centuries-old eschio plant, local name for oak, placed at the foot of Monte Nero and, despite the Sacred Image being transported to the collegiate church of San Giovanni, this miraculously had been found the next day hanging from the tree. The miraculous event is reported in the "Report on the Collegiate Church of Valentano and all the other Churches": "It is certain that it was transported twice to the Parish Church of Valentano, and the following morning with an admirable miracle it was found in the same elcium tree, and therefore the Church and Convent were built. ". The prodigy, interpreted as the will of the Virgin to have a chapel erected on the site, involved the erection of a small chapel within which the centuries-old shaft was incorporated, already dry on which the tile was definitively placed. The entire sacred building was subsequently erected around that first nucleus, complete on the upper floor of a convent for the Carmelite Fathers and which, due to its masonry techniques, could be traced back to no earlier than the sixteenth century. In Valentano the processions to the Church took place twice a year, "on one Friday in March and the third feast of Easter"; the building was important not only for the community of the town but pilgrims also came from distant places, for example, from the city of Siena.
