Santo Speco Monastery

The origins of the current Benedictine abbey date back to the early sixth century, when St. Benedict of Norcia, after the experiment of hermit life conducted in a cave near the ancient villa built there by Nero, founded twelve monasteries and a school to give hospitality to his first disciples, coming in part from the Roman nobility.
Later (XII century) on the initiative of the abbots the sanctuary-monastery of the Sacro Speco was built, built over the original memory of the Saint.
Built next to a rock wall, it consists of a complex of rooms, churches and chapels, sometimes carved out of the rock, it preserves fresco decorations from various eras and a portrait of St. Francis (1223).

once again, i'm very impressed with all these buildings that are constructed onto the hillsides, its amazing. you would think falling rocks over the years would damage it. love the pov, the light and the subject. cheers

Hi Silvio,
A special place for a monastery where the buildings are right next to almost vertical cliffs. Fresh spring foliage looks good and sidelight works well. That tower in the background catches my attention too.

What a fabulous view! The monastery is both beautiful and spectacular with its location on the steep side of the rock. Nature gave you a good composition with the grey background and the green areas below and above the buildings. Sharpness and light are perfect.

This reminds me a little of the Sumela Monastery in Turkey, also built into a steep cliff face. Good upward pov with superb sharpness. Tfs!

Superbly shown the mountain and the monastery built under the giant rocks, Silvio.
Digonal slope gave a wonderful allocated space for this POV. Also, well lit and sharp outcome.

a special place protected by this rocky slope. I liked this view with the shapes of the old monastery in evidence. a special building glued in the rocks.

Spectacular situation of this monastery, located in that rock wall excavated in the mountain, of severe construction, it looks very large.
Very effective coloring, which highlights the details of the image.

very impressive monastery and amazing location on a side of a hill in between the rocky mountain. I like the diagonal composition here which resulted in eye pleasing geometry.
Nice light as well.

Interesting location indeed and a portrayal of a very medieval monastery that seems to grow organically out of the rugged slope and looks so camouflage. The combination of colour looks cool with feel of depth and height. Congrats.
