Church of Santa Maria Assunta - Bominaco
Bominaco is a fraction of the municipality of Caporciano, in the province of L'Aquila. The church of Santa Maria Assunta and the nearby oratory of San Pellegrino were part of a monastery dating back to the beginning of the Christian era when, between the third and fourth centuries, the place became the burial of San Pellegrino, who was martyred in Bominaco pierced by spears. A first church was built around the eighth century, it was later donated to the Farfa abbey to become independent in 1001. The dating of the church of Santa Maria Assunta is not certain, the first historical sources that mention the church are an imperial diploma of Conrad II of 1027, a bull of Leo IX of 1051 and a diploma of Henry V of 1118. In them the monastery is mentioned as ecclesia sancti Peregrini. In the act of donation by Ugo di Gerberto of 1093, however, the church is dedicated to the Mother of God (Deigenetricis) and to San Pellegrino, which suggests a change in the name of the church, with the name of Mary which appears later in inscription on the ambo and on that of the altar. Probably as a result of this change, the oratory dedicated to St. Pellegrino was built. In 1902 it was declared a national monument.
