Madonna and Child with two angelsrnIt comes from the Church of Santa Maria in Abeto in Preci. Tempera on wood by a Florentine painter, identified in the Master of the Strauss Madonna, active between the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century. It is what remains of a triptych shortened from the cusp and cut in the lower part.rnAlso known are the two side panels, depicting Santa Paola Romano and Santa Eustochio. in the photo you can see the recomposed triptych on display at the Diocesan Museum of Spoleto.rnThe triptych was certainly dismembered even before the earthquake of 1703, which seriously damaged the central panel.rnThe Madonna is represented in frontal view on a background of drape with plant motifs and circles with facing dogs and birds, and supported by two angels whose faces can be seen foreshortened. The Virgin is seated on a cushion covered with stars, she has on her knees the blessing Child on whose left hand a bird is placed, which seems intrigued by the bright red of the coral branch that hangs from Jesus' neck. Note the quality of the pictorial rendering and the technique of execution; the skilful use of lacquers gives the work a great liveliness of colors and spatial depth. Painting finds its place in that group of Florentine works whose singular and dense presence in the Preci area is explained by the custom of the inhabitants of the area to emigrate to Tuscany to find employment, in particular at the customs, and bring back, on returning home , works of the most important Florentine artists. Suffice it to recall, in the same Abeto, the works of Neri di Bicci and Piero di Cosimo, and in the nearby Todiano that of Filippino Lippi. rnr
