Church of Santa Maria della Concezione - Castle of Rocchette di Massa Martana

The small oratory, set inside the Rocchette castle, dedicated to the "Blessed Virgin Mary under the invocation of the Most Holy Conception", was already built in 1568, when it was visited by the Bishop of Todi Angelo Cesi, who was in perfect condition, on May 6.
The construction of the church, in the sixteenth century, was probably due to an increase in the population of the castle.

The external walls are currently plastered; the entrance is through a simple wooden door, placed on two external stone steps, above which a sculptural fragment of the IX-X century with a cross has been walled up.

The interior consists of a small hall with an irregular geometry, covered with a single pitch, with a semicircular apse, placed on a step.
It preserves an interesting cycle of contemporary and later frescoes: on the left, within three horizontal panels, frescoes of the sixteenth century: the Madonna del Soccorso, locally called the "Madonna del Tortoro" because of the club that wields one to protect the child from the devil, below on the left a kneeling and praying gentlewoman. The story, dear to popular devotion in the area, tells that a mother, worried about the disobedient child, apostrophes him saying "the devil be taken away from you", who promptly appears to take the child with him; the mother, desperate, asks for help from the Madonna who intervenes on the scene brandishing a club to ward off the devil.
In the center there is a fresco of the Madonna and Child, on the right a figure with the papal tiara and the pastoral staff of a bishop.
The chapel, in front of the entrance to the church, is completely frescoed: above the Eternal blessing in a choir of angels, from the 15th century, and on the left below, the Madonna crowned by two angels crushing the dragon with her feet with some in the background villages and castles, among which we seem to see Rocchette; the fresco bears the date 7 December 1602.
In the center is a late 15th or early 16th century fresco with the Madonna enthroned with Child surmounted by angels between two very damaged and unidentifiable figures, perhaps on the right is Santa Lucia, and San Sebastiano; further to the right is the 17th century image of Sant'Antonio Abate.
