Maculinea (Phengaris) rebeli (Hirsche 1904)

Beautiful and very rare butterfly belonging to the Lycaenidae family, it is the first, for now the only one, found in Umbria.
It is encountered quite frequently in the meadows surrounding the road that leads from the Gavelli lakes to the Fonti di Campofoglio, in the meadows between the Fonte del Ladrone and the Colli di Campofoglio and at Forca Capistrella, sites that vegetate its nourishing plants with relative abundance: Gentiana cruciata and Gentianella germanica.
The length of the front wing varies from 12 to 19 mm.
The male has a purplish blue color with a black border.
The female has a dark brown color with discocellular tract and some black postdiscal points. It has a purplish blue shade extended in the basal and disc area.
The reverse, identical for the two genera, has a light brown color with black points.
It is found in meadows and clearings from the basal to the mountain level, from 500 to about 1800 meters above sea level, present in the Alps and the Apennines.

It has a single annual generation with flickering in June-July.
