Photographer's Note
The Tagliamento river is quite wide between the villages of Portis and Pioverno, on the road between Udine and Tolmezzo. This small island in the middle of the river (the river itself being dry in late summer months) is an unusual sight. Even more unusual is the fact that this "island" is in fact a military fortification, a concrete bunker armed with anti-tank cannons and heavy machine guns. This bunker was operational until the early nineties, and now is deserted...somewhat of a monument to the cold war era.
This picture was cropped, additionally saturated and sharpened, as well as filtered with Neat Image. Some small "intruding" objects were removed with copy/paste technique.

Technically not a perfect shot: the weather was wrong and the time of the day too, less humidity would help for a better contrast, the sunset light would give more colours. I think the framing is wrong too, the interesting point is too in the middle of the frame, causing a "boring" sight: I would have chosen a vertical framing with the island a bit towards the lower right corner.
But, very interesting from the historical point of view: I know there is a lot of similar fortifications along Tagliamento and Isonzo, but it is not easy to spot them if you are not an expert.
A friend of mine told me that once, at night, he went with his girlfirend with the car in the woods, and suddenly, out of the earth, came out a SAM system. He spent the rest of the night explaining the story to the Carabinieri :-)
PS How did they use this fortification during flooding periods?
