Photographer's Note

This is a view of the giant and wonderful San Giovanni Beach in the Posada Municipality, on the East Coast of Sardinia.

When i was child i spent in Sardinia, i think, 12 summer vacations with my parents.
For some years we went on the North East Coast, the Costa Smeralda, but for the must part of the time we went in the Posada area, 150 km south of Olbia.
I was talking about 70's, when Sardinia in Italy was yet considered as a Tropical and far away island, with really few few tourists, the opposite of today!
In the whole coast between Olbia and Posada, 150 km there were not more than 6, 8 hotels and a couple of campings. Nothing more.

One of the first thing that i remember about my childhood was the pedestrian bridge that cross a small river and some ponds on the way to the San Giovanni Beach.
It was an old iron bridge, built at the beginnings of the XX Century, partially collapsed.
It was the only way to reach the 5 miles beach from the Posada village.
I well remember that for me, a young child of 3 or 4 years, just the braves can walk over that terrifiant collapsed bridge!
And the brave were us!Me and my family! A beach just for the Heroes!

why?
'cause in the 5 miles beach there was no one...we where the only tourists in a 5 miles beach! And local people ...at that time don't like to swimm or spent time at the sun!

So, when in the past August i had organized a mini tour with friend in the Posada district we went also to the San Giovanni Beach.
And i was really proud to went there with my young son!

The small trail in the pond...not more...now there is a large street with a segregated cycle facility and a giant parking (0.50 euro per hour)

The pond now is a 5th part of the old one.

There are African sellers all along the way.

There were some bars on the beach, some thousands of people from the whole Europe on the beach and many local guys.

...and...and...the old collapsed iron bridge...wasn't there...
Now there is a modern concrete and yellow steel pedestrian bridge...
The beac is still wonderful, as the colours of the cold sea, the beach have fantastic sand, it's really clean and well managed by the Municipality every day at sunrise...Sure 30 years ago it was a bit different...and without ...that old bridge...

Not more time for the heroes and the braves!
