‘The remaining arches of Heraclea’
Continuation of my previous photo about Macedonia's largest archaeological site.
The only remaining arches quickly attract many visitors' attention. It’s of course not a Forum Romanum, but it strikes me that few visitors to the country show pictures of Heraclea.
So here are some more photos.
In the WS another view and also one of the relatively well preserved mosaics.
Heraclea was an ancient Greek city in Macedonia, later ruled by the Romans.
Founded in the 4th century BC it was named in honour of the mythological hero Heracles.
In the middle of the 2nd century BC the Romans conquered Macedonia and made it a province. For Heraclea this became a prosperous period.
Life in Heraclea died out at the end of the 6th century when it is believed the population moved to the present location of nearby Bitola.

Hi Paul,1500 years have passed since the activities ceased here, but good memories still remain. Surely these arches are among the highlights to photograph, and the capture is really excellent. Excellent details also on the mosaics, really beautiful, in the WS, accompanied by a very useful total view, in fact this site is not very well known, so every post is essential to find out. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Paul,
Seeing this I'm just waiting for the top bricks to the right to fall down. Let's hope there won't be another earthquake in this area. These two arches are really picturesque and will obviously attract all photographers coming here. The blue sky provides a good background. The wider WS view is interesting for showing us the nice environment surrounding this place and making a visit the more enjoyable.
Best regards,
Gert

Bonsoir Paul,

Hi Paul,
Very attractive motif, well captured. Yes I think I remember seeing it in th eprevious photo from the other side.
Here you can also managed to include the other arch below and a fragemnt of a column as well. I enjoyed the workshop photos as well.
The red brick goes so well with the blue sky and of course the geometry is stunning!

Goedenavond Paul,
Bedankt
Prettig weekend,
John

Hello Paul
Good view of this beautiful arch. Clarity and exposure are well done. The shadows of the arch on the ground create a good perspective.

Hi Paul,
It is interesting to see those arches remaining while everything else has collapsed. Certainly an interesting place to visit and an important site of archeology. Sidelight looks good here.

Hi Paul
It's difficult to photograph places like this and I like your idea to use the two arches as both the main subject and the frame for the rest of the view.
I have of course been there... :-) But I haven't got any photos as good as this.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Paul,
What an amazing, archaeological site!
You have given the scene immediate interest by placing the double arch right in the f/g, ensuring that viewers have to go beneath it to explore other features.
Both your photograph show excellent clarity.
Mosaics are such wonderful artistic creations!
One has just been uncovered in the U.K. which depicts Achilles dragging Hector behind his chariot. No such scene has ever been discovered before!
Thank you for sharing these,
Bev :-)

Hello Paul, an excellent shot making the best use of the arches as they frame the site beyond, besides allowing us an excellent view of their construction.
I hope that they can survive and do not collapse if there were to be an earthquake.
The mosaic is very beautiful. The more general view puts this site into context.
Excellent work.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Paul,
I did go to one nearby archeological site. Wishing now I had found the time and local bus timetables to get to this one too. Nice use of the fg red brick arches as a frame. Tfs!

Hi Paul.
Wonderful composition of this very interesting archaeological site, of which these are the first photos I see and that I enjoy thanks to their quality, I love this main one framing the perspective in the two arches, in the WS another beautiful view and a fantastic mosaic.
Good perspective of the image, very pleasing to the eye.
Colour, sharpness and luminosity are effectively managed.
Very good composition, magnificent presentation.
Have a good weekend.
Warm greetings.
Luis.
P.S. You asked me about the modern building that was under construction when you went to Tbilisi, because it is very original, they are like two huge tubes, soon it will be one of the photos that I will upload to the gallery.

These are three fine entries from Heraclea. I like the arches in the main entry. The mosaics in the WS look impressive, too.
