Photographer's Note

The view from the Citadel of Victoria, Gozo, spans the entire island. The location was first fortified in the bronze age, c. 1500 B.C., and possibly before that. Later it was a Phoenician fortress and eventually an acropolis complex was built here by Roman times. The current structure dates large from 1600.

Dominating the view is the dome of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Xewkija. The church was consecrated in 1978 and is capped by a 246 foot tall dome with a diameter of 89 feet. It’s the largest church on Gozo and its high position is visible from many parts of the island. It’s modeled on the church of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice.

Howdy Paul,

Fine panorama of the Victoria Citadel with the Church of St. John dominant, appearing much older than reality, with magnificent dome and lesser domes with huge neo Romanesque walls.

Hello Paul,
I have a similar picture. If I remember well, the districts we see on the background are located on the island of Malta. The small piece of sea between Malta and Gozo is not visible here.
Fascinating how this church towers over the village.

Hello Paul,
This is a fine panoramic view of Malta with the cathedral placed in a nice position. The off center placement of the cathedral draws the eye across the scene nicely. The lighting is fine and the photo has excellent sharpness.
