Photographer's Note

There are few images on TE of Moldova, and even fewer from the breakaway republic of Transnistria in the far east of the country. So here is one more. There was a bloody civil war between 1990 -1992. The ceasefire has held since Russia, Moldova and Transnistria agreed to a peace treaty. Today it operates as a completely separate country with its own government, currency, border patrol, flag etc. This is the Russian Orthodox Church of Nativity built in 1999. It appears on some of that local currency. The Dniester River forms the current border with Moldova and flows south into the Black Sea. The city of Odessa on the Ukrainian coast is around 100 km away by road. Here is a link to a photo essay of Tiraspol, which has a population of around 136,000.
