Photographer's Note
I spent about 3 hours in Monte Carlo while staying with friends in Nice. I have to say that this place struck me as being over-built, over-crowded and rather artificial. But it was a matter of interest to go there, and as the new-ish camera was a permanent extension of my face I did take a few shots.
This one I shot as darkness was about to settle on the Mediterranean coast. I found a spot that looks isolated and peaceful here, although in reality it is only a few hundred metres or so from the hubbub of an underground carpark and mall. Out of the camera this was darker, underexposed. Adjustment of the levels brought out the colour and gradient in the sky. I've cropped only a tiny amount from this shot. The edifice on the left conceals all the hurlyburly of the famed harbour tucked in behind it, and all the highrise development, and the view looks across to the next headland and the one after that, relatively pristine.

Hi Andrew, I went there in the mid-70's with school, as a teenager. Hated the place. For a kid from the inductrial north of England, it struck me as far too showy. I doesn't sound like it's changed much. I preferred St Maxime and, of all the places I visited, St Maries de la Mer on the Camargue.
I really like the soft, subtle colours of your shot and the composition is excellent.
Best wishes,
Paul.

Andrew, If you hadn't told me about all the surrounding clatter-and-clang of overcivilization, I would never have guessed. This looks exquisitely peaceful and isolated.. maybe even just a bit melancholy. Good job. The composition is simple and the contrasts intriguing.. The bird couldn't be better placed or posed.

Very interesting and effective shot, Andrew. I'm drawn to and also shoot with a "minimalist" style and the shot clearly shows how effective and interesting a photo with few elements can be. A bit of noise in the blue areas, but I think this adds to the mystery.
Nice work, Mike

andrew,
it seems i am falling behind constantly here in te. life keeps throwing curve balls at every turn. i just wish i had at least few days without anything to do.
about this shot.WOW!
it is simple yet the color and the details on the edifice makes this composition powerful.mood created by the colors in this composition is one of solitude. in my opinion this one belongs in the "one of your best".
well done.

Careful study of your subject led to this calm and moody view of the shoreline with pleasing color values along the horizon to try to balance the shot. Enjoy your new camera.

Hi Andrew,
interesting to know that there's a hub of activity going on behind this seemingly peaceful view. Lovely shot with the tower well placed on the left of the frame. There's plenty of texture in the bricks and wonderful tones of rich brown too. A very fine, yet simple composition my friend, well done.
Regards
Stephen
ps. It can't be long before you go back to France.....have a great time.
