Photographer's Note
This is my photo #1500 on TE (plus probably a few hundred workshops). I regret that it's not the best photo to use for a "jubilee" like that, but who cares – really?
However, I took the opportunity to add another country to my TE gallery, although probably not even a microscope could help me find it on the TE world map. This is from Monaco, a sovereign microstate on the French Riviera, covering an area of slightly more than 2 square kilometers, making it the world's second smallest country after the Vatican.
I spent most of a Sunday in Monaco in October 1981, one of my days off from the French course I was taking in Juan-les-Pins ahead of a long journey to French speaking parts of West Africa.
I was more impressed by the buildings and atmosphere in Monaco than I had expected, so I was quite pleased with my day by the time I took the train back to Juan-les-Pins in the evening.
Today's photo shows the view from a terrace next to the royal palace (Le Palais des Princes de Monaco). For the WS I basically just turned right, as far as I remember. They were both scanned from Kodachrome slides, but I admit the result this time is below my average.
Here is a larger version.
This concludes my very short series of photos from the French Riviera.

Gert, the terrace next to the royal palace offers a stunning view of Monaco. This micro state, i never visited so far, is nestled between the Mediterranean sea and the hills. The picture shows a high density of apartment blocks. The visitors are well included in the fg. Fine colors, good sharpness, enthralling photo note, regards.

Hello Gert,
Congratulations on your 1500th upload & thanks for sticking with the site despite technical glitches from time to time. My train stopped in Monaco all of 2 minutes so I didn't see much on the way to Marseilles. You at least got a nice view of the town from this lookout. Tfs!

Hi Gert
Even the man is wearing a lighter shade of blue...is blue on sale? :) I knew it was small, but I didn't know Monaco was THAT small, I learned something new today from your Time Machine. Always a rewarding feeling to add a new country on your TE map, even if it did take a few decades :) Looking at the scene, I wonder if its a steep drop beyond that stone wall. and you know me, i'm going to love that city view in the bg. Its so good because the light is striking it so well. Nice one. cheers

Hello Gert, Congratulations on 100 photos and a new country. Monaco is indeed amazing. So small but every centimetre is wonderfully used and it is a lot to see. My district Praga South is ten times bigger. Other funny numbers: Monaco has a land border of 5.47 km, the world's shortest coastline of approximately 3.83 km (and a width that varies between 1,700 and 349 m. I was also amazed when I visited it in the nineties. Great view.
I like also such piles of cannon balls like in WS.
As to the countries, without Angola and Zambia (but with Qatar) in my list, we are just equal. Who would expect it some years ago :). I have no photos from a few countries where I was in the predigital times.
Have a nice day

Hi Gert,
The distance fronm the stone wall and the mountains is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings and of the mountains. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hej Gert,

Fifteen-hundred are only the beginning, Gert, keep posting - we get a time-machine feel when looking at your collection.
Monaco is yet a small heaven for photography, dur to the terrain the town built upon.
The WS photo is also attractive with all those cannons and balls.
Good afternoon,

the image isn't so clear, but I liked the use of elements here, we have a real view of the town ahead. I remember when I was climbing in a public lift, with a plastic bag with my camera inside and I was totally wet because the hot temperatures. a man entered in the lift and begun to check me because I wasn't so elegant to visit his town. I checked him too with my angry face and he smiled with a superb falsity.
take care

Hello Gert, congratulations on this milestone on TE.
The two ladies in blue invite us into the scene, as we look over the wall to see the view. So many apartment blocks, not much room for more development. I wonder what it looks like now.
Excellent scan.
Kind regards, Jean.

A great achievement and so many great photo's. Most of them from 20 to 30 years ago what makes them even interesting only because of that,

Hello Gert,
Wow, 1500 photos! It's a very impressive number. I imagine you must have thousands more that will never be seen here on TE. :-) This is a nice view overlooking Monaco, and I am immediately drawn to the two women whose shirts are the same color. I was also surprised to look at the WS photo and see all those cannons and cannonballs. I wasn't expecting to see them; I thought there would simply be more buildings. :-)

Hello Gert,
The main entry has a fine contrast between the historic wall and the modern buildings. However, I like the scenery in the WS better. 👍🏻👍🏻

Dear Gert,
Back then, you utilized the people (and the wall) very well, to create a counter-point to the panorama in the bg. I have to say, its a quite a spectacular photo.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Gert,
I'm glad you said you were impressed by the buildings and the atmosphere, for I felt like that when we visited. I was first surprised that I could travel here on the bus , from Nice, for only one euro! I really enjoyed walking around, looking at the sights and absorbing the atmosphere.
Love this view! Three people, looking down across the modern city, really anchors the f/g and gives a vast sense of depth. Somehow the people seem calm and settled, as if they are prepared to stay and ponder for a lot longer. That encourages us to ponder and peruse the b/g, too.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Bonjour Gert,
Congratulations on number 1500 on TrekEarth and of course also for the mini yellow dot that colour on your map of Europe. 😊
Too bad that in 1981 blue was the popular fashion colour. Red had of course been more striking. 😉
Have a nice Sunday, groet Rob

Firstly, congratulations on your 1500th photo! It's quite a result. I wanted to post something special for my 400th but missed it (but I can see it was the photo from Ginza, so maybe was quite special after all).
Anyway... I'm not sure what you mean by "below your average", I can't see anything wrong with the quality here. I like both photos a lot, they show the mountainous landscape in and around Monaco so well, I like your compositions, especially the fact you excluded the sky in the WS photo but also how you included people and the sense of depth and perspective.
I won't be posting photos from Wakhan for a few weeks... but will come back to it. I'll be mostly travelling until February - 1st February is my first weekend back home and until then: Poland, Majorca, xxxxx and Poland again. I will leave the "xxxxx" for you to guess... ;-) It's a country in Asia... ok, it's not very helpful... It's a country you have visited... right, that's not very helpful either... sorry. :-D
I will post many more photos from Afghanistan after that. Including men with beards (I met many clean-shaven guys there too though).
Have a nice week

Hei Gert

Dear Gert,
Congratulationson your 1500th picture ! And on your 85th country entered in yourt gallery !! What a full life of ytravelling !
I suppose Monte-Carlo has changed a lot since these photos were taken nearly 40 years ago, I believe with higher skyscra, because otherwise there wasn’t much room left for more buildings .
Thanks for sharing and have a goosd Sunday.
Marie-Louise.
