Take the L-train

Picture taken in a Rotterdam subway train on the first leg of a day trip to the UK to go shopping for vintage Tannoy loudspeakers. It was the first metro of the day and since it was mid summer the train was almost empty. Riding an empty train is a fascinating xperience – a graphic void traveling thru dark tunnels. This is the first pic of a mini series of the UK trip. I’ll add some more info thru the creation of a travelogue later.

Take the L- train (to Brooklyn) is a track from the Cool, Steady and Easy album of acid jazz outfit Brooklyn Funk Essentials (Dorado, 1995).

PCS tech: slightly cropped, adjusted the levels, contrast saturation and curves differentially; ran the Noiseware plug-in filter on some elements of this ISO 1600 picture – I did not remove all the noise ‘cause I like the things the noise works here, USM-ed , added a frame added and saved for the web.

I like this thing you sometimes do, start a series with a shot in the train on the way. Nicely framed simple candid shot, and good to ahve an almost empty car for this. You must be a REAL hi-fi freak to go to such lengths. I can't believe they're not available in Holland. I don't know why, but speakers seem to be one of the few things that the rest of the world hasn't been able to make better than the UK. It's still worth paying a premium for UK made ones.

Goedenmiddag Bert,
Het valt werkelijk op dat de tram er werkelijk netjes bij ligt, zelfs de zittingen ongeschonden zijn, ook geen graffiti dus Nederland op zijn best. Ietje meer van de krant en wij konden gewoon mee de krant lezen zo scherp is uw foto gemaakt, ook zijn de kleuren mooi realitisch, geen van uw grootste Bert maar aangenaam voor het kijken.
Prettige weekend gewenst met deze goede winter weersverwachting en een temp. in Vlaanderen van 8,6° Celsius

Hi Bert,
Strong composition. I really like this photo. So creative, and at the same time so natural. I thing you did not make any special preparation. Just point and shoot. The empty train and the characteristic light creates here a great ambience helped by a nice POV.

I like the daily life touch here a lot,just an empty train and some details from another passenger.Good result for the high ISO settings.

A nice tilt again Bert,good daily life shot even at ISO 1600, did you try lower value just for comparison, for lessa grain ? Anyway, well presented and nice graphic, well done. Have a great wek end, thanks for sharing.

I like this kind of "every day" photo, we live with things , but we don't see them anymore, so it's a good idea to feel this from outside .
there is a little noise, I presume light was not so good, that why the 1600 iso!

I'm glad you didn't remove all the noise, Bert - otherwise this might look to squeaky polished and lose its slightly edgy feel. Good use of the tilt, a nice framing of the repetitive elements of the train car's interior, and an interesting inclusion of the feet of the newspaper-reading passenger.

Hier herken ik duidelijk de Rotterdamse metro. Een zeer origineel idee en een uitstekende uitvoering. De krant en benen geven een zekere spanning aan de foto.

Yo Bert! The VERY few times that I'm in the metro, I always think too that the lines and forms are very worth while taking a shot, and I think you gave it a very good treatment. Bold colors, and noise. Even the tilt works for you, adds dynamism.
Richard is right, you and your friends are nuts to go all the way to England, but... pleasantly nuts ;-)

Het mag dan een simpele foto lijken. Ik vind hem mooi Bert. De lijnen degoede scherpte de kleuren en de juiste crop in mijn ogen. Hele goede foto. Ik zie hieraan dat je je nog steeds aan het ontwikkelen bent. Goed werk.

Hej Bert,
Dit soort stedelijk foto's van metro's en dergelijke vind ik altijd erg leuk. Zo heb ik ook nog steeds het plan om een keer ('s nachts) een serie foto's de maken van de (hypermoderne) metro hier in Kopenhagen (maar dat had ik misschien al geschreven bij een van je vorige metrofoto's ;-)). Ik ken het gevoel dat je beschrijft van een lege metrotrein wel. Mooi inbeeld gebracht hier en leuk dat je ook nog dat stukje van die krant en die knie erbij hebt. :-) Goed werk. Prettig weekend verder.

De metro van Rotterdam is zoveel mooier dan de ouwe koekblikken waarmee ze in Amsterdam rijden. In Amsterdam zullen ze wel vervangen worden, maar ik geloof dat dat pas in 2008 is. Er was een tijd dat ik elke dag in de metro in Rotterdam zat, maar da's al een tijd geleden.
Wat ik mooi vind van deze foto is dat-ie een beetje schuin is genomen. Geeft de foto veel dynamiek. Mooi werk!
