Photographer's Note
Through the Wall
After the many positive reactions to my photos of the Chinese wall of Song Dong, we have to go inside quickly.
While the exterior is a truly impenetrable wall made up of the hundreds of windows and doors that the artist Song Dong collected from the old walled Hutong neighbourhoods in Beijing, the inside of the wall gives the illusion of infinity.
The interior, covered with mirrors, not only reflects the hundreds of different lamps in the installation, but also the visitor sees his own appearance reflected endlessly in the work.
We recognize the frames of the windows and doors, but these are all provided with reflective glass. The ceiling and floor are also made of mirrored glass, creating an infinite reflection.
Hundreds of different lamps hang close to each other on the ceiling, making it seem as if we are in the cosmos with stars, nebulae, supernovas and black holes on all sides.
The result is amazing as I will show in this and the following TE post.
Today we focus on the window frames and their endlessly mirroring windows. We can already see something of the effect of the lamps, especially in the third photo, but I will zoom in on that in my next presentation.

Hello Rob,
This is getting better all the time. It looks like an installation that would widely exceed most visitors' expectations. No wonder the two men stepping out of it in the other WS were smiling so happily. I had no idea what they had seen. Now I know and I can't stop smiling. Perhaps the #3 is the most fascinating and "customer friendly" photo, but I know it would have been against your principles to use that as the main upload. ;-) But all photos are fascinating and this one is very attractive partly for the simple unpainted or light green window frames. Don't you think someone like Mondrian would have liked this view?
Best regards,
Gert

Bonjour Rob,
Finalement, cela ressemble plus à un labyrinthe qu'à un mur. C'est incroyable toutes ces rencontres de formes droites qui deviennent croches à cause des angles.
Amicalement

Hallo Rob, the picture presents the interior of this remarkable artwork. It is composed of rectangle and square frames arranged together and some mirrors. It reminds a labyrinth. The colored lamps lighting the interior have style. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

Hello Rob, a fascinating subject for you and your camera, and likewise, a fascinating subject for us to view. I wonder how many window frames were actually used?
This work offers endless possibilities to a photographer.
The main shot arouses our interest quite naturally, you are so close that we can view the textures and faded colours with delight.
‘Inside the wall’ is an amazing picture with so many mirrors and lights!
The ‘selfie’ plays tricks as there are so many mirrors!
Excellent post.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hallo Rob,

Ha! Ha! Rob, it would have been fun to see your face reflected in all the frames!
This is the shot to intrigue us, with its multiple shapes and depth but then a wonderful 'follow-up' showing the passageway of colours, shapes and scaled by figures.
The selfie is just like an artist adding his signature to his work!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Beste Rob,
Wij maken het ons wel heel moeilijk, wanneer we zien hoe men een kustwerk kan creëren.
Natuurlijk de foto is heel goed genomen uit een geode hoek.
Al drie dimensioneel beeld is perfect.
Goede foto werk, bedankt.
Prettig dag gewenst uit Vlaanderen,
John

Took me quite a while to comprehend what we see here, Rob.
An original idea and meticulously rendered.
Nice to see you in the WS selfie.
Good afternoon,

Hi Rob,
Wow, this is wonderful. Because it is impossible to see what are reflections and what is reality, this gives strong state of confusion. And old frames is a beautiful theme too.

Hello Rob, When there are mirrors on all sides, they create fantastic effects of infinity or depth. Even if I know that it is just a mirror under my feet, I am afraid to stand there and it seems that there is the abyss. I was in such a cage in Dubai and it was a great experience. I suppose that there is something similar here. It would be fun to be there.
Kind regards MAlgo

Hi Rob,
it looked almost as if you were immersed in a virtual reality. Photo-shopped into a scene from a surreal world.
But the last photo explains the context more and we can better imagine the whole setting.
Very photogenic spot for sure.
Great presentation,
M
