Photographer's Note
Bulb Field
The most famous work of the 90-year-old Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is probably her yellow pumpkin with black dots that can be admired in various places in the world.
This pumpkin is also part of the exhibition of some of her iconic works in the Voorlinden Museum. But I will show you today one of the other exhibited works.
Yayoi Kusama, is one of the most important and high-profile artists of this time.
Kusama is called the princess of polka dots.
She says about it herself: “... a polka dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life, and also the form of the moon, which is calm. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. Polka dots become movement ... Polka dots are a way to infinity. "
In the work of Kusama that I show in this post, the dot is used 3-dimensionally in the form of a large number of shiny spheres with the size of a football.
Placed against each other in one of the halls of the museum, they form a shiny bulb field that must be closely monitored by the museum guards to prevent visitors from moving the bulbs. Children in particular are attracted by the balls to play with.

Hello Rob,
I love the title! So apt!
The main photograph is so full of smooth, 3D shapes, all so slightly different in their reflections that we can track the position of various figures.
It's a bit like looking in distorting mirrors!
I was surprised by your w/s, that the spheres weren't actually contained. Now I understand your notes about children being tempted to play with them!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Rob,
You have stolen my show! I have photos of these shining balls from Moderna Museet from a few years ago. But these photos are so much better, which explains why I never showed mine. It's probably because of your greater skill, possibly also because of a differently sized room with a different light. And no doubt you had better luck with other visitors to make the photos more attractive. But I love the reflections and the possibilities of an almost endless number of selfies. The tight crop means a lot, so I will send this to my favourites.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Rob,
The reflections on the bulds are assets to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the Bulb Field. The light is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

An amazing display, and reckon by the WS's what to whole idea is, Rob.
Each has its own reflection - but together those made a extraordinary picture.
Good afternoon,

Hello Rob, yet another gift for a photographer, presenting endless possibilities.
From the main post I was totally unaware of the size of the bulbs, until I looked at ‘ Lost in the bulb field’, and realised their size.
As Beverley says, and I agree with her, we were surprised that the bulbs were not contained, how tempting for young children to attempt to move them!
In your main shot, I love the repetition of the reflections. The light is beautifully managed.
Excellent shots, thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Jean.

Dag Rob,

Hi Rob
The bulbs, with almost identical reflections, create an abstract effect. Very eye-catching photo. You chose a really good composition and crop.
It's amazing that the work of art is so big that people can walk among these shiny spheres.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Rob,
What a creative work of art, and a set of creative photos showing it off. I like this main photo, filled with all the mirrored balls. I was looking in each one to see the differences. The WS photos are also great. There are endless photo possibilities with so many reflections. Merry Christmas to you!

hello Rob, I must confess that I like much more the two Workshop pictures where we see what fun have the people looking at all these bubbles. The main photo reminded me the Kapoor sculpture from Guggenheim Bilbao, there the balls were like the tree but the result - the many reflections were similar.
Kind regards MAlgo

A very nice photo for the Christmas time, I like the repetition of silver bulbs with interesting reflections, in your photo dominates the silver color, in my photo the golden color is the main subject :)
Merry Christmas to you !

Dear Rob,
As usual when coming to your gallery, I didn’t know anything about the artist presented, but then I am all the more knowledgeable :-)
Clever composition of giant petanque boules ! One of the attractions of course is the reflections.
3 very interesting pictures !
Kindest regards.

Hi Rob
I wonder what this scene would look like without all the reflections and repeating shapes/forms...for me thats the allure and attraction here. Surprised you didn't use Pic #3 as a main post. cool shot, I like the full frame compo. cheers

Hello Rob,
Of the three photos you posted, this is my favorite, I just love the repetition of perfect spheres. 👏 We have an installation by Yayoi Kusama at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh. It is called Infinity Dots. I wish we had taken the time time to go to the Mattress Factory when you guys were here.
