Orange Hat

Holland is a constitutional monarchy. Since the 16th century , with some breaks, the royal family is the house of Orange. And on April 30, the birthday of the former Queen, we Dutch celebrate Queen’s day, the day of the monarchy so to speak. An exception is made when April 30 is a Sunday, like this year, then it’s celebrated a day earlier due to the Protestant- Calvinistic roots of the Netherlands.
Queen’s day is a popular celebration with of course orange as the dominant colour, cultural manifestations, street theatre and musical performances.
The last few years it basically is a giant garage sale (vrij markt = free market), people crowd to the designated selling places at night so they are sure they can get a spot to sell their surplus stuff when the day starts.

Walking on the Erasmusbridge a.k.a. ‘The Swan’ to the city centre, I encountered these girls on their way to a Dance venue on the Wilhelminapier. Giggling they kept repeating to the passers-by “It wasn’t me, she did it”. Following up on this I said “Well, then I will have to take a picture” and they struck this pose as a result.

Yep, my first Canon 30D post, putting its speed and shallow depth of field possibilities to use.

Orange Hat is a Stacy Harshman ‘space folk’ track from her 2003 ‘Maybe if I wanna’ album

PCS2 tech: heavily cropped, corrected for perspective distortion, altered the contrast, saturation, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, USM-ed (two pass 1,3p 130% and 3,9 42%) , added a frame and saved for the web.
