Photographer's Note

On day 6 of our 12 day Hurtigruten trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back we reached Honningsvag and the Nordkapp (Northern Cape). The town which is on the island of Mageroy has 2,800 inhabitants and is a fishing port. The strait between Mageroy island and the mainland is a busy shipping lane used by trawlers, cruise ships and cargo ships travelling to the Barents Sea and Russia. It was snowing as you can probably see in this photo - and very cold! Taken early afternoon.

Hello Ann,
Fine colored houses unde the snow but what a strange dark sky. It makes a beautiful conrast with the snow and the houses.

haha, another fine photo from Norway.
I love how the sky looks so grey and bleak, but yet the little town below still has lots of illumination.
the homes are placed in a zig zag type of configuration which is kinda nice too, not being uniform or placed all in a straight line.

and you even have a small little lighthouse perched up in the bg :)

I bet you had an awesome time in Norway.

I don't remember seeing photos from norway on this site very often, or maybe i have been too an on and off kind of a guy..but this one is just surreal, pretty photo but the colour palate the canvas, the dark grey, can't take my eyes off it !!

Great atmosphere in this photo! The contrast of the white snow and dark, grey sky is beautiful. The colors of the houses pop out to add even more magic to the scene. This view really conjures up the feeling of being far north.

It's amazing that such beauty could be found in a place which I would normally define as dull and dreary and miseraby cold. Through a combination of your skill and the grey sky and water the colours of the buildings have acquired a beautiful softness. The various pastel coloured houses match each other in a perfect way which I suspect is more by coincidence than actual planning. Maybe the snow has something to do with it, ot it's just the contrast with the overwhelming greyness that does the trick. It's in any way a very nicely composed photo.

There is no doubt about the chill!
Although offering a fine, united composition, the cloaking colours are grey and white. I'm shivering just looking!
I love the clarity of the shot as well as the effective leads and mood.
Was the atmosphere clearer so far north?

il freddo si percepisce anche guardando la foto, non riesco a immaginare quello che si riesce a sentire direttamente.
Il cielo e il mare grigi fanno da sfondo al piccolo villaggio immerso nelle neve, ma che fa affiorare i colori delle case.

There are 2 cool features in this that I really think make a difference: firstly the fact that the scene is so illuminated when the sky behind is so dark. It's a great gift to the photographed, Secondly there's the snow covering the scene and inthis way giving a simplicity to it... the colored houses standing out. Honningsvåg means Honey Bay. Nice name :)
It looks a lot like Greenland by the way.

What an amazing sky and light! And what a compo! It's a very, very attractive image. The colour isn't abundant, but at the same time is part of the charm because the houses and the boat stand out on all that white and grey.

a lovely atmosphere with no noise given by the snow and also the grey sky. The houses seem to gather in order to get warm, and some colors (orange and dark red and dark blue also) add life in this grey world.

Quintessential image of this part of the world. Even the light is emblematic of the Norwegian north. In this post you have proven beyond doubt that direct sunlight is not necessary to create a beautiful photo. The colour palette here is really interesting and I like the contrast between the bright snow, the brooding sky and the vibrant houses. Image full of charm and atmosphere!

Hello Ann,

Another beautiful photograph from your peregrinations into the Arctic earlier this year and a fine note to accompany it.

This is a lovely photograph, perfectly composed with the shoreline leading the eye nicely into the picture and with the houses, as they climb up the snowy landscape, standing out magically against the dark sky. Fabulous light, fine vibrant colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity despite the fact that it was clearly snowing when you took this shot.

Glad you like my recent posts, you asked about the post processing - it is a bit of an ongoing experiment using some HDR techniques. It has something of a "Marmite" appeal about it with some loving the results yet others saying that it looks unreal. I especially like the effect on the "Tall Ships" as it seems to capture some of the timeless old world appeal of these craft. I get the impression that activity here on TE is on the decline. I still cannot access the forums to get an idea of the mood and gauge opinion unfortunately. Thanks again for your interest Ann. B X

great photo work. I wouldn't know how to take a decent photo under such circumstances. I usually quit when the weather is bad, or even I stay rather at home. But you have turned it clearly to your advantage with the dark sky contrasting nicely with the snow covered land.
