Photographer's Note

My previous photo presented the Mars Fountain in the Market Square in Poznan. I mentioned there are three other fountains decorating the square, two fountains are dedicated to other Roman gods: Neptune and Apollo. The fourth fountain presents a mythical scene: the abduction of Proserpina. Proserpina is, I think, more popular under her Greek name, Persephone.

Persephone was a daughter of Zeus and Demeter. The beautiful Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, the god of underground, who forced her to be his wife. Persephone’s mother, Demeter who is the goddess of harvest, agriculture and fertility of the earth, was long not able to find her daughter. When she found out that Persephone was kidnapped, she stopped all plants from growing which caused a famine. Zeus had to intervene and a compromise was reached. Persephone was supposed to spend few months each year with her mother and few months with her new husband, which explains the existence of the four seasons in nature...
