Photographer's Note

Today I'm posting a photo of Penela once more, this time of another castle. In fact, the Castle of Germanelo is situated just a few kilometres far from Penela,on a high hill overlooking the Rabaçal Valley, a magnificent landscape I can tell you.
It was built by D. Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, in order to defend the Mondego River during the battles against the Moorish Invasion, just like the Castle of Penela. However, still in the same century, the area was retaken and the castle abandoned. The wall we see today has been rebuilt much time later following the plans of the original.
