Photographer's Note

This square is the real heart of the city of Lisbon. In this capture in vertical format I tried to catch the graphism of the pavement of mosaic, with its typical wavy shapes, and the slenderness of the statue of D. Pedro IV. In background we see the beautiful building of the National Theatre.

Wikipedia: The Praça de D. Pedro IV, more known by its former name Rossio, is the neuralgic center of Lisbon for several centuries. There have taken place judgments, spectacles, festivals, military parades and Autos-da-fé during the Inquisition.

Nowadays there political meetings take place, and its sober buildings of style pombalino are occupied by souvenir shops, jeweler's shops and cafeterias. In the center of the square is placed the statue of D. Pedro IV, the first emperor of the independent Brazil. In its basis, four feminine figures are allegories of the justice, wisdom, force and moderation, qualities that are attributed to D. Pedro.

In the middle of the 19th century the square was covered by white and black mosaics forming drawings, as it is typical in the portuguese capital. It was first one of the designs of this kind in decorating the pavement of the city. In the north face of the square there is the National Theatre Dona Maria II, who received the name of the daughter of D. Pedro, D. Maria II.

Esta plaza es el verdadero corazón de la ciudad de Lisboa. En esta toma en formato vertical intenté captar el grafismo del pavimento de mosaico, con sus típicas formas onduladas, y la esbeltez de la estatua de D. Pedro IV. Al fondo vemos el bello edificio del Teatro Nacional.

Wikipedia: La Praça de D. Pedro IV, más conocida por su antiguo nombre Rossio, es el centro neurálgico de Lisboa desde hace varios siglos. En ella han tenido lugar juicios, espectáculos, festivales, desfiles militares y Autos de fe durante la Inquisición.

Actualmente allí tienen lugar encuentros políticos, y sus sobrios edificios de estilo pombalino están ocupados por tiendas de recuerdos, joyerías y cafeterías. En el centro se encuentra la estatua de D. Pedro IV, el primer emperador del Brasil independiente. En su base, las cuatro figuras femeninas son alegorías de la justicia, sabiduría, fuerza y moderación, cualidades que se atribuyen a D. Pedro.

A mediados del siglo XIX la plaza fue cubierta por mosaicos blancos y negros formando dibujos, como es típico en la capital portugesa. Fue uno de los primeros diseños de este tipo en decorar el pavimento de la ciudad. En la cara norte de la plaza se encuentra el Teatro Nacional Doña María II, que recibió el nombre de la hija de D. Pedro, D. María II.

Today we are neighbors. What a gorgeous shot of a scene that has become familiar, especially through photographs of by José Pires and Gonçalo Lopes. The wavy patterns of the square create an astonishing 3-dimensional effect, of miniature hills and valleys. I see that the season was mid-fall, and the weather entirely conducive to short sleeves.

A lovely shot of this beautiful square with a large empty space in the foreground. The monument is captured in full view and the buildings in the back are shown well with many architectural details. I like the vertical frame with sharpness and colors.

Muito obrigado por teres fotografado assim a minha cidade de Lisboa.
Um trabalho fotográfico excelente este que realizas-te em Lisboa. Esta Praça do Rossio com grande destaque para a calçada portuguesa e em fundo o Teatro Nacional D. Maria I. Fazem uma composição muito bela onda a escolha da vertical resulta bem por causa da estátua de D. Pedro IV.

Fantastica composicion de esta hermosa plaza, elegiste un magnifico POV, que nos muestra el bonito grafismo del pavimento, con esas ondas que parece que tienen movimiento, ideal el gran monumento y al fondo la elegante arquitectura del teatro al fondo, lo que da un gran DOF a la imagen. Es una ideal imagen de uno de los rincones mas encantadores de la ciudad.
Perfecto dia de sol que se transmite en esta gran luminosidad y perfecta nitidez.

Très bonne observation pour nous offrir une magnifique perspective depuis cette place avec ce pavage formant des vagues et amenant notre regard sur cette très belle colonne surmontée d'une sculpture.

Hi Josep
looking at the photos of Barcelona and Lisbon, these are cities that i must visit at some point.

I think we've seen this area before on TE, but we certainly don't mind seeing it again and again.
The vertical presentation works best here, as we see more and more of the wave pattern compared to the horizontal choice.
lighting and depth are great too.

I like the the "game" of the pavement, because
it looks a little like waves in the water
(or I have too much imagination).
The picture is taken from a great point of
view, has a great composition and light management
and the vertical position creates an extra depth
in this picture........Good work.
