Photographer's Note

I've decided to go back to my archives again and to post the first of my old images from Portugal. These are scans from slides and have needed some restoration but they bring back great memories of work I did for the Ministry of Environment and the Instituto Naçional de Habitação. I hope they have some interest for you.

Here I show the wonderful train station at Vila Franca de Xira, a town of about 130,000 on the west bank of the Tagus 32 km north-east of Lisbon.

The magnificently preserved azulejos show scenes from the nearby marshland along the Tagus in the region known as the Leziria. They include old fishing boats on the river, the bulls raised on the salty pasture, which are used in the town's famous bull-running festivals, and the magnificent Lusitano horses, esteemed for quick reflexes and maneuverability, which are also bred on the marshes.
