Photographer's Note
The Douro vinhateiro, an area of the Douro Valley in Portugal, has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
These reaches of the Douro have a microclimate allowing for cultivation of olives, almonds, and especially grapes that are important for making the famous Port wine.
The region around Pinhão is considered to be the centre of Port wine, with its picturesque quintas or farms clinging on to almost vertical slopes dropping down to the river.
Traditionally, the wine was taken down river in flat-bottom boats called rabelos to be stored in barrels in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto.

Hello Kris,
It is the lighting which makes this picture so appealing.
The low evening light gives this picture a wonderful depth. The river and the cluster of white red-roofed houses anchor the composition and there are wonderful lines of terracing on the nearby steep hills which lead the eye well into the photograph. Beautiful colours and good exposure.
Lovely!
Kind Regards,
John.
