Encantos do Douro, a photo from Porto, Nord

Photographer's Note

As I have already said in the note of my previous post, in my opinion one of the most fascinating places of Porto are the banks of its river Douro. This is of course true also by night when all the lights of the city reflects on the water. After having had dinner in one of the characteristic restaurants of Ribeira, the quarter near the river, we went for a stroll along the Douro, admiring the lovely spectacle of the town of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the opposite side, where all the cellars of Porto wine are situated, as it is visible in this photo by the luminous ensigns. To the right you can see the traditional boats called “barcos rabelos” which were used once to carry the wine barrels and now converted for sightseeing tours.
If you observe attentively the name of the boat is just “encantos do Douro” which means charm of the Douro, and to me it is a most suitable and proper title for this photo.

Ciao Donato,se al posto della barca ci fosse stata una capanna sarebbe stato un presepe perfetto! Che luci meravigliose,che cattura dei dettagli e che riflessi! Grande foto,brindiamo con un bel Sandeman,la scritta si legge benissimo ed e' un vero miracolo nel poco spazio che il sito concede.Complimentoni e buona serata,Luciano

Those shiny coloured lights and reflections really add punch to the picture. Including part of the boat adds well to the composition. Excellent quality image.

io non sono mai stata capace di fare foto notturne e le apprezzo moltissimo quando le vedo. Le mille luci molticolori che si riflettono nell'acqua mi mettono allegria anche perchè mi fanno pensare a certe serate in rada quando si è avvolti nel silenzio e da lontano si sente il riverbero della vita che rumoreggia al di là del mare. Ecco, la tua foto mi ha fatto rivivere questa bella sensazione. Bellissima foto.

Ciao caro Donato,
hai fatto bene a scegliere questo titolo, prendendo spunto dalla barca, perchè questa notturna è un vero incanto. Sicuramente la scena è suggestiva di suo, ma il merito è tutto tuo che l'hai ripresa in modo fantastico, con perfetta qualità fotografica e gestendo al meglio i tempi di esposizione. Una mia convinzione è che, per considerare buona una notturna, ci devono essere i colori perfettamente reali e ben definiti. Questo è un ottimo esempio di buona notturna. Bravissimo!

Ciao caro Donato

Ahhh, I thought Douro might have meant the same thing that d'oro means in Italian. Because this composition is just golden with those wonderful tones dominating the cityscape so beautifully. And of course our Sea Wolf has included a boat in the frame, which balances the image and adds another element of interest. The reflections along the banks of the river are enchanting. What a beautiful place!

Ottima vista nella notte con una molto buona gestione della luce. Le ben colorate luce delle case del Ribeira sorgono molto ben nel nero del fondo. L'ampio primo plano, con la barca ben locata, da una piacevole profondità alla composizione.

I agree with you 100%.Porto is trully a magical city,especially by night when the buildings are nice illuminated and the Douro river reflects the light of the city in many amazing colors.I´ve been there twice,but hope to visit it again.I like the way you composed your image by capture in the rigt part of it the traditional boat,which fills nicely the FG and do not obstruct us the view of unique Porto architecture.Beautiful illuminations and excellent captured colors.It´s simply pleasure for our eyes.

A fine low light recording of the river and its surroundings!
Sharp fine details, and some people seems to be wise enough to bring a tripod hehehe....
Inclusion of the traditional boat in front, enhances the story and also creates depth in the composition!

A beautiful night photo of hight quality. To start with you have controlled the exposure in a perfect way with no over exposed areas and there still are enough details visible in the low light areas. The colour balance is fine and the river, its reflections and ripples have been rendered excellently. The traditional boat on the foreground is a charming detail. Yes, you indeed captured the charm of Douro at night time in a wonderful way. My compliments!

this is such a wonderful place. I remember my walk there in the evening as well. Great original photo here. Most of all I like the colorful reflexes in the river. The dark sky and surrounding contributes to a very interesting atmosphere. Fragment of the boat breaks the symmetry and provides an interesting foreground.
I like the slightly brownish color of the sky, I got it also couple of times at the dark night while photographing a well lit city.
Very romantic feeling. I hope I can repeat the walk some time in the future again.

I agree to the title as well! The exposure is perfect espcicially as I see the crispness in this picture. What I like the most is the feeling of the wind here, as the flags flutter
