Evening sun in Rossio, a photo from Lisboa, Sud

Photographer's Note

I took this photo in Rossio's Square, during a nice sunny evening, the first one of my stay in Lisbon.

In this framing I tried to catch the elegance of the architecture of the buildings and of the Elevator of Santa Justa, emphasized on a blue sky with a few very photogenic clouds, the beautiful baroque fountain imported from France in the 19th century, the water effect under a nice light, and specially, the scene of a father taking a photo to his two daughters, who you can see below at the right side.

Wikipedia: The Praça de D. Pedro IV, more known by its former name Rossio, is the neuralgic center of Lisbon for several centuries. There have taken place judgments, spectacles, festivals, military parades and Autos-da-fé during the Inquisition.

Nowadays there political meetings take place, and its sober buildings of style pombalino are occupied by souvenir shops, jeweler's shops and cafeterias. In the center of the square is placed the statue of D. Pedro IV, the first emperor of the independent Brazil. In its basis, four feminine figures are allegories of the justice, wisdom, force and moderation, qualities that are attributed to D. Pedro.

In the middle of the 19th century the square was covered by white and black mosaics forming drawings, as it is typical in the portuguese capital. It was first one of the designs of this kind in decorating the pavement of the city. In the north face of the square there is the National Theatre Dona Maria II, who received the name of the daughter of D. Pedro, D. Maria II.

Tomé esta foto en la Plaza de Rossio, durante una bonita tarde soleada, la primera de mi estancia en Lisboa.

En este encuadre intenté captar la elegancia de la arquitectura de los edificios y del Elevador de Santa Justa, enfatizada sobre un cielo azul y unas nubes muy fotogénicas, la bella fuente barroca importada de Francia en el siglo XIX, el efecto del agua bajo una bonita luz, y especialmente, la escena de un padre tomando una foto a sus dos hijas, que podéis ver abajo a la derecha.

Wikipedia: La Praça de D. Pedro IV, más conocida por su antiguo nombre Rossio, es el centro neurálgico de Lisboa desde hace varios siglos. En ella han tenido lugar juicios, espectáculos, festivales, desfiles militares y Autos de fe durante la Inquisición.

Actualmente allí tienen lugar encuentros políticos, y sus sobrios edificios de estilo pombalino están ocupados por tiendas de recuerdos, joyerías y cafeterías. En el centro se encuentra la estatua de D. Pedro IV, el primer emperador del Brasil independiente. En su base, las cuatro figuras femeninas son alegorías de la justicia, sabiduría, fuerza y moderación, cualidades que se atribuyen a D. Pedro.

A mediados del siglo XIX la plaza fue cubierta por mosaicos blancos y negros formando dibujos, como es típico en la capital portugesa. Fue uno de los primeros diseños de este tipo en decorar el pavimento de la ciudad. En la cara norte de la plaza se encuentra el Teatro Nacional Doña María II, que recibió el nombre de la hija de D. Pedro, D. María II.

la luce grande protagonista di questo bello scatto.
Molto bella la piazza con le costruzioni tipiche e la fontana dinanzi ad esse, mi piace quella pennellata di bianco sul cielo azzurro, ma la luce contribuisce a rendere il tutto molto caldo ed avvolgente.

Hi Josep, Nice view of the Rossio square. less known side, with the view of the Santa Justa. Here with this angle the famous pavement looks less impressive.

la luce di questa piazza è straordinaria. Pochi elementi: la fontana che disegna delle piacevoli linee curve con i getti d'acqua, gente che passeggia o siede, un padre che gioca con i figli: dettagli di vita quotidiana incorniociati da un cielo luminoso e brillante.Grande nitidezza e contrasto. Lisbon is so beautiful, and your photos well demonstrate it.
I am jealous here about the clouds, Portugal has a great weather all year round with a uniformly blue sky so having the great architecture of Lisbon so nicely decorated with the pattern in the sky is a great bonus.

Bonjour Josep,
un ciel clément et finement décoré, ces fins nuages ajoutent des points à son esthétique. Une petite place tranquille où apparemment les gens prennent plaisir à re reposer. Un jeu d'eau central lui permet de ne pas être monotone, bien que le dallage à lui seul soit déjà agréable à l'oeil.
Dommage que les façades ne soient pas inondées de soleil, mais la lumières qu'elles rejettent est bien suffisante.

Each element of the photo invites you to look a little more and wander. Love the way you've filled the frame and atmosphere in this, just about everything to add the local flavour. Great that you have managed to inject some vivid colours into the scene, the bright colors standout superbly. its beautiful even despite the fact that the light isn't striking the buildings straight on.
and you're right, those clouds are so photogenic, really adding an elegance that compliments the architecture, and fountain.

Nice picture of this square. If am not mistaken our friend Goncalo has posted lots of pictures from here, judging from the wave pattern of the mosaic. The light falling on the water of the fountain making them glow is another highlight of the scene. Well done!

Holá Josep,

um encuadre classico de la plaza de Rossio con el fontanario, el arco y a la derecha el elevador.

Al final y apesar del tiempo no estar muy bueno aun conseguiste una serie de fotos muy buenas y con luminosidad interessane tal como esta en que se nota perfectamente una luz caliente de final de tarde tanto en el suelo como en las nubes.

Pensaba que no tenia ninguna foto pendiente, y mira por donde esta maravillosa vista de la plaza la habia saltado.
El encuadre es fantastico con las preciosas fachadas y la hermosa fuente, esta luz de tarde da un ambiente de calidez ideal, un bonito cielo que añade su encanto a la composicion.
El colorido resulta muy bonito con esta suavidad de colores, la presencia de toda esa gente da mucha vitalidad a la imagen, un magnifico trabajo amigo mio.
