Photographer's Note

Today I'm doing something I've never done before. I'm recycling a workshop photo, upgrading it to a regular post and converting it back from B&W to the original colour version.

I added this photo from Porto in 1984 to my last upload a couple of days ago. Then I rather regretted I didn't show it properly, because although it is technically inferior I like it very much for the composition and the spectacular location shown. I also had several appreciative remarks from other TE members, so there seems to be something special with this photo from a poor area of the city, overlooking the mighty Dom Luís I bridge, built in the 1880's.

On the original Kodachrome slide the bridge is almost lost in the haze and it's impossible to see where the sky stops and the river starts. I had to give it a rather tough treatment to bring out the details of the bridge, which made the photo very noisy. I have done my best to clean it, but the noise, or grain, is still much too obvious.

A slightly less noisy view of Porto in 1984 can be seen in the workshop.

Here is a larger version of the main photo.
