Encounter at Alcântara Mar, a photo from Lisboa, Sud

Photographer's Note

While on our way back to Alfama, after a visit to the Doca de Santo Amara, I was starting to shoot a train at Alcântara Mar station.

After a few moments, a young woman came running into the frame from the ticket office, clutching her phone and ticket, trying to catch the Cascais bound train. Alas, she missed it. Luckily the trains on this line run fairly frequent.

Information for train geeks like me: The EMU (electrical multiple unit, UTE in CP parlance) in the background is one of the 18 trains of the 3251-3271 series, which are exclusively used on the Lisboa (Cais do Sodre) – Cascais line. Like most Portuguese passenger trains, these stainless steel trains are Sorefame build (1959-1979 and modernized in 1998.), following design and patents of the Budd co of Phil. USA.

By the way: after posting I alas noticed that the exposure was lowered in the process. A not unknown phenomenon but a real pity.

Hello Bert,
She missed her train but she didn't miss your photo, so she timed herself well in a way she didn't know. Red and yellow go well together, and this is more fun than just a photo of a train.
It happens quite often that a photo looks darker after posting it. In this case I can't see that it caused much trouble, but I usually keep it in mind when I prepare a photo for the site.

Uitstekende timing, je ziet de wanhoop op het gezicht van de rennende vrouw duidelijk, deze trein moest ze halen! Mooie impressie van het dagelijks leven met het treinstation als decor. Het rood van haar kleding en de gele voorkant van de trein zijn ook aantrekkelijk.

Ik vind dat de dame meer inbrengt, door haar aanwezigheid.
Het lijkt zo meer een actie foto, met de trein.
Mooie hoek genomen, dit creëert mooie diepte en perspectief.

Good morning, Bert!

This is every day life in the Netherlands, Germany, France or wherever. Someone rushing for her/his train. But the face of the woman is pure dynamics, and the fact that this was taken in Portugal give some lightness to the entire atmosphere.

Hello Bert, I am also a fan of the trains (I like everything connected with the journeys). Nice view of this woman in red trying to catch the train. If the trains are frequent, nothing serious happened. excellent composition with the train on the diagonal; nice colours - yellow and red.

Lovely timing !
Red and yellow go well together. But also the green of the glasses and the blue sky ! Apart from that, the colours are rather neutral, and those bright spots make the picture, as well as the expression of stress on the girl's face.

Dag Bert,
Je hebt deze dame toch wel een drankje aangeboden nu zij door het missen van de trein je deze uitgelezen kans voor een prachtige foto heeft gegeven. Of moest zij te veel uithijgen.
Je hebt in elk geval uitstekend van de mogelijkheid gebruik gemaakt.
Op mijn monitor ziet de foto er prima uit.

The train and its fine composition within the frame made an excellent photograph but, I like it even more, with the story to tell! Without your notes, explaining the situation, we could have imagined a whole range of possibilities for her anxious expression and obvious movement!

Hi Bert,
Your timing with this shot is perfect. She is clearly in a hurry and this split second shot is just right. Red and yellow make a good combination. I've travelled a couple of times on this line. There are very nice places on the route.

its always good to view these shots in the larger file, it looks great there. it has more life to it in my opinion. an excellent spontaneous moment captured of the lady missing her train. and yes, the yellow and red combo works well too. cheers

Hallo Bert, excellent action scene taken at a railway station. The lady is running to catch her train with her mobile and her ticket in hand. The picture shows the train stopped in the opposite quay. Fine colors, good sharpness, explanatory photo note, regards.

I like the strong primary colors of the scene: the yellow front of the train, the red clothes of the woman and the blue sky, all of them with very good saturation that makes the image really beautiful! Excellent light and sharpness too! Well done!
