An impressive and colossal Portuguese engineering work, it has an extension of nearly 8 km, of which the first 1.3 km are underground galleries, 843 arches and is visible from almost all the hills surrounding the city of Elvas, its construction took more than 20 years to be completed - It was intended to enable the fortified city to withstand prolonged sieges - Elvas is one of the most emblematic cities in the Alentejo region, former quarter-city, is the largest fortress city in the world, and was the most important stronghold on the Portuguese border - Since 2012, the city and its fortifications have been classified as Heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site - The historic center, Islamic, medieval and seventeenth century walls, the forts of Santa Luzia and Graça, 3 forts and the Aqueduct of Amoreira constitute the largest bastioned fortification in the world - video of the site at: https://youtu.be/8gkjCC0Mbzw
