Glacier lake, a photo from Sibiu, Ouest

Photographer's Note

Bâlea Lake is a glacial lake situated high in the Fagaras Mountains of Transylvania set at a height of 2,034 m above sea level. The lake is simply stunning in the Summer and in the Winter when you will have a very different experience and would be more likely to stay in it’s seasonal ice hotel. In the Summer a twisting snake of a road leads you to the top of the mountains where the lake and it’s cabanas perch above the clouds. It is breath taking scenery at its most rugged and is an absolute must on any itinerary, any season. During the winter the only way up to the frozen lake is by cable car, which makes the site even more incredible when you arrive. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone occupied from snow mobiling and ice skating in the winter to trekking and swimming in the Summer.

Hi Ovidiu, this lake has been made famous by many romanian TE members!:)
I very much like your pov here, using an interesting foreground, with punchy colors, sharp edges, an interesting triangle-shaped rock and the beautiful cloud/mist.
However, I'm questioning your choice of a f-stop at 7.1...I would have used a much higher f-stop in order to really used all the depth in this image. At 7.1, here you only have the couple first feet of water that are in the focus zone. At maybe 14 or more, you'd have the rock with the nice yellow dots on it, the water AND the houses in focus...

Hello Ovidiu,
In summmer the clouds hang very low over the mountains, just above the roof of the buildings.
Even in July the water looks cold as ice ... or is this only an impression ?
Beautiful reflections of the mountain slope and the houses in the water.

L'avant-plan est parfait pour restituer une ambiance toute particulière.
Les bulles sur la glace donnent une indication de la température extérieure.

Wonderfull idyllic scenery perfect captured. Perfect pov and layout.
Very nice mirroring effect.
The green fernes on the rocks at bottom part is an evidence,that the atmosphere here is still not polluted !

una foto dalla composizione molto ben fatt ache sfrutta opttimamente un primo piano per dare maggiore profondità al paesaggio.
Indovinato anche il taglio verticale che ti permette di includere nel fotogramma anche la nebbia che sale su per le montagne quale ottimo complemento ad una visione del lago ghiacciato.

What a place :) And to know this is in Transylvania too makes it even more special, as the mist and grey tones fit in well with the typical impression I have of this place. The reflections in the lake are truly beautiful, and that mist adds such an air of mystery. the red roofed buildings are the perfect splash of color for the scene.

hi ovidiu. the mist falling down the steep peaks looks marvellous subject for a photo. i like your vertical composition starting from the rocks and leading the eyes to the hyperobla and houses. i am with manamo about his suggestion of f stop and focus on the rocks.

An atmospheric chilly scene with a calming influence! Love this, fog presents so many possibilities and fog can change colors, shapes and spaces in such a wonderful way but so often kills off the image but you've used it well with the strong foreground details really draw the viewer in, suitably diffused and that good merging strong background subjects. Despite the foggy conditions, you certainly made the most of the occasion and the image leaves us wondering what is behind the fog! Very well done shot, Congrats

I remember this lake from other pictures of yours, the moody lighting and colours, the fog, the textures and mysterious reflections make the view fascinating. In this picture the composition is based on a very attractive perspective that makes excellent use of the vertical frame. There's only a little concern about sharpness or a clear selection of focus. The power of the perspective, the beauty of the scenery and the atmosphere, however, make a very effective impact and captivate the viewer. Congratulations and thank you!

I like your management of depth of field in this capture, where we can see clearly the stones in foreground and the hotel in background, on the opposite shore of the lake.
A good lighting and a good colours level, in spite of the foggy day.

Hello Ovidiu,

I am agree with Marc, alone without tripod or monopod has the high F/values sometimes no value.
A monopod or a tripod is very important for take a good and very depth sharp picture.
I love these nice picture this cares for depth and perspective.
Colours and sharpness be pleasant to look at.
