Photographer's Note

The door shown on this picture is on East facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, facing the. Quintana Square. It is called the Holy Door (Porta Santa), described in guide book as a door open only on special occasions. When we were there this was the only entrance to the cathedral, because the main entrance on the west side was closed for renovation. “On this door niches contain the image of James and his disciples Athanasius and Theodore at his side. On the bottom and sides of the door were placed twenty-four figures of prophets and apostles (including St. James) coming from the old stone choir of Master Mateo. Inside this door through a small courtyard is the true Holy Door, which enters into the ambulatory of the apse of the church.”
I put a picture into the Workshop to show how long the lineup was for the entering into the Cathedral

There is a nice closeup of the carvings of the Holy Door by Manuel Mayorga here
