Photographer's Note

This is my second picture presenting a traditional Canarian balcony along Avenida Maritima in Santa Cruz de La Palma.

On this occasion I wanted to point out the fact that some town or island names in Spain may be quite confusing. The main town on the island of La Palma is Santa Cruz. For a change the main town on the island of Tenerife is… Santa Cruz. So the first is called Santa Cruz de La Palma and the second Santa Cruz de Tenerife. But this is just beginning of the fun.

If you type “La Palma” in Google Maps it will by default show you a part of town Cartagena near Murcia on mainland Spain. The main town on Mallorca is called Palma and the main town on the island of Gran Canaria is called Las Palmas. When you see the departure destination in the airport it usually shows the name of town, so if you see plane to Gran Canaria it will show Las Palmas and a plane to Mallorca may be showed as Palma. The plane to La Palma Island may be showed as Santa Cruz…

If you buy the whole holiday package you may just think you go to Mallorca but end up on Canarias but if you are booking flight and hotel independently… Our rep in the hotel told us that at least once per month there is a case that somebody booked flight to La Palma and the hotel in Mallorca.
