Photographer's Note
I will start a series of photos dedicated to the city of Murcia, a city not well known for the great tourism, but which is worth taking into account not far from the Mediterranean have the atmosphere of coastal cities.
................
Murcia is the great baroque city of the Mediterranean. Strolling through its streets to run into countless parishes and convents with exuberant facades of this style. We could think, then, that the cathedral of Murcia will also be baroque. In part this is true, but as we will see the seo murciana hosts many more surprises than expected.
Indeed, the cathedral of Murcia is the paradigm of most Spanish cathedrals, where the non-conformity of the Spanish spirit and the tastes of each era made it "reinvent" it, and change its style continuously. Therefore we can say that it is a Gothic cathedral with important Renaissance and Baroque reforms.
Although the conquest of the city took place in the thirteenth century, the construction of a new temple as a cathedral was not started at this early date, as it was used, as was done in most cases, the city's main mosque for such purposes.
More than a century later, it was decided to eliminate the Christianized mosque and build a fully Christian architecture building. So the new building of the cathedral of Murcia began to be built already in the fourteenth century, specifically in 1394, in the time of Bishop Fernando de Pedrosa to finish in 1467.
Gothic interior of the Cathedral.
For the dates mentioned above, the Cathedral of Murcia is a Gothic building with three naves of different height topped with headboard with ambulatory.
Although there are some details related to the Mediterranean Gothic, certainly its architecture is linked to the Castilian Gothic.
Its arches are very pointed and the ribbed vaults complex with terceletes. The pillars are fasciculated with a multitude of columns with cylindrical and ochavate capitals.
The Chapel of the Vélez.
On the south side the cathedral, in the stretch of the ambulatory, stands out anomalously towards the city a spectacular polygonal building. It is the Chapel of the Vélez, an important work of Gothic-flamboyant style.
It was commanded to be built as a family vault by the Mayor of the Kingdom, Don Juan Chacón, Marquis of los Vélez, a prominent participant in the Granada War.
Externally the Vélez Chapel is polygonal structured in several bodies decorated with shields of the Chacones and Fajardos. Other expressive elements visually are the savage tenentes and the stone chain that runs through the upper part. In general it is appreciated, unlike the interior, a clear Renaissance style.
Inwardly the space is vaulted with a starry vault of great beauty. The decoration of the walls of the Chapel of Los Vélez is very rich, with a marked late-Gothic style not without certain Mudejar tastes. The iconographic and decorative elements used are characters of the New Testament, angels, shields, animals, cardinals, pineapples, grenades, Gothic leaf litter, etc.
The covers of the Apostles and the Chains.
The southern facade of the Apostles is a superb and elegant door of the Elizabethan Gothic, being its teacher Diego Sánchez de Almazán (1464)
It shows four large statues of apostles and in their archivolts there are attached statues of old musicians under dosletes.rnThe north gate or Las Cadenas began in 1512 and is a good Renaissance example where the Peace of Granada is exalted.
The baroque facade and the tower.
It is what most attracts the attention of this temple is its monumental façade of the feet. It is an impressive Baroque work as a stone altarpiece, designed by Jaime Bort in 1737 and 1754.
This facade is a good example of Baroque aesthetics in its heyday, which deliberately plays outgoing and incoming intensify the contract between light and shadow and the sinuous curves of architectural and sculptural strokes look for animation, mobility and a certain vital anguish.
The tower also stands out for its height (almost 100 meters) and began to be erected in the sixteenth century (1519) and was completed in 1793. It has several overlapping bodies and octagonal dome cap Ventura Rodríguez.
--------------------------------------------------

Hello Luis,
It's good to see you back. Having any kind of problem with the internet connection seems to be one of the worst things that can happen to you in today's society. We are totally lost without it.
As for this cathedral it is stunningly magnificent, and the photo is excellently taken. The light and contrasts are superb and I appreciate the 3D effect you achieved. Like many other buildings of this kind in Europe it was obviously built and rebuilt and having parts added to it so many times that it covers all architectural styles from Gothic to Baroque.
Kind regards,
Gert

Bonjour, cher Luis,

Hello dear Luis.
Confess, do you ever read such long notes? As for me, when the note is too long, I just skip it. Sorry :). Anyway, I see the magnificent Baroque church. I have visited many towns in Spain, but still, there are many I haven't seen. and Murcia is one of them. superb presentation. and how elaborate is the frame!

Hola, Luis!
Excelente trabajo!

Hi Luis
A fascinating capture of this majestic cathedral with so much delicate detail and good use of light make the image seem divine. A really powerful sense of height where inclusion of the figures really demonstrates how huge this edifice is doesn't it? A great capture, TFS.

Hola Luis,
you are right indeed, Murcia does not seem to be too popular and yet the coast must be great for tourists as well.
I suppose people choose either islands for beaches or other towns if they are interested in architecture.
I am really glad you present this off the beaten track place. I have been in Spain (although not mainland) this year and will be yet later so statistically I have visited Spain too many times already and have to visit some other places for a change next year... so I am not sure if I will have a chance to see Murcia soon.
What a beautiful cathedral. Amazing architecture caught in a great light too.
I like how the people walk the square providing only silhouettes in the shade while the structure is so perfectly lit.
The top of the church is quite interesting it looks as if someone took a dome of the church and imprinted on a play-dough. Differently speaking, the facade appears as if it was a mold, a template for producing an actual cathedral.
Great work!!
