Photographer's Note

Shot from a boat trip to Sandhamn we passed also the Vaxholm fortress.

Some info from the web:
The first writings about the history of Vaxholm date back to the 16th century, when King Gustav Vasa ordered that Vaxholm should be fortified in order to lock the seaway into Stockholm. The first fortress on the rocky island between Vaxö and Rindö, despite its small size, frightened away both the Danes and the Russians from trying to occupy Stockholm. The citadel of Vaxholm guarded the sea-approach to Stockholm via “Kodjupet”. The approach via “Oxdjupet”, on the other side of the Rindö island, was first filled with stone, which had to be dredged away later on. This is where the fortress Oscar Fredriksborg was built and there is still an active defensive installation here.
