Photographer's Note

Coffee, cigarettes and newspapers: Sunday morning at the Belle Epoque, Gerechtigkeitsgasse 18, Bern, Switzerland.

With apologies to all those who know and love Bern, we found Sunday morning in the city somewhat underwhelming. Nearly everything was shut, but the Belle Epoque was doing business, and we sat down for a coffee. These two were on a nearby table, engaged in quite animated conversation over the scattered newspapers.

The Belle Epoque itself was quite a find. An Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, interior, with works by Gustav Klimt, Ferdinan Hodler, Mucha and Toulouse Lautrec on the walls of the restaurant, and they weren't reproductions. An art collector, Dr. Philippe D. Ledermann, bought the place to showcase his collection to the public; originally he imagined the place as a museum, but soon decided, with I suspect acute commercial acumen, that an hotel would be a better bet. Well worth a visit when in Bern. It even opens on a Sunday!

The workshop shows a glimpse of the interior.
