Photographer's Note

From the top of Breithorn, a view of the Monte Rosa massif in a fantastic day.

From left to right (The four highest peaks):
Nordend 4609m,
Dufourspitze 4634m,
Zumsteinspitze 4563m,
Signalkuppe 4554m

Monte Rosa's glaciers flow in abundance, but only on the northern flanks, where they stream towards the pastures of the Zermatt valley. The Italian south and east side, in contrast, present a dramatic, steep and the most impressing wall in Europe with a 2470 meters height from the end of Valle Anzasca to two of the highest peaks of the Group - Nordend and Zumsteinspitze.

The highest peak on the Monte Rosa is Dufourspitze which is the highest mountain in Switzerland, and the second highest in The Alps. Only Mont Blanc is higher, but Dufourspitze is more demanding and more exposed. Monte Rosa includes 22 peaks higher than 4.000 meter. The Eastern Wall seen from Macugnaga is 2470 meter high and stunning: A Himalayan wall in the Alps.

SWISS SIDE
To climb Dufourspitze from the Swiss side is a very long walk on glacier were you are rising 1880 meters in five to seven hours. Only the last two hours is exposed with some light climbing, PD+. In the high season - July/August - 10-50 people will climb the peak in the morning.

ITALIAN SIDE
From the Italian side you will find a more exciting and demanding route from Signalkuppe .
