Photographer's Note

AlpTransit Gotthard is creating a flat rail link for future travel through the Alps. At the heart of the new transalpine rail route is Gotthard Base Tunnel. With a length of 57 km, the world's longest railway tunnel should become operational at the end of 2016. In March 2007 two thirds of the tunnels had been excavated.

The tunnel is being bored in five different sections. The factory area in the picture belongs to Amsteg subsection near the northern end of the future tunnel. It is among other things a big cement factory transforming stone drilled from the tunnel to concrete.

In the picture you can also see rails of temporary narrow gauge railway used during the project.
