Shrouded, a photo from Cumbria, England

Photographer's Note

This was the view one morning from a campsite near Appleby. Or rather, after a heat wave, I woke up to this dark band of cloud looming over the horizon. Muffling it. Compressing it.

Appleby is itself a little visited part of Cumbria. Its sandwiched inbetween the North York Moors and Lake District, and very few people stop to take a look at its typical English farmlands, smaller mountains and nearby stone circle.

I've barely manipulated the image - autolevels and a little increase in saturation,

Well done as I like the mood captured here.
A lonely and well shaped tree,not centered,2/3 of gloomy sky,almost menacing and oppressing.
You got a good control of light.

Hi Fiona,
The lonely tree set against the green field and that rather dramatic looking sky makes for a fascinating composition. Love that relief between the dark clouds at the top and the bottom with a layer of white. Maybe you could have cloned out that cable wire?
Nevertheless its a superb picture.

Hi Fiona,

Usually the lonely trees are very beautiful. You has captured here this one in a simple but very interesting scene. The strong contrast between the dark sky and the bright green of the bottom is very nice and dramatic. In a shot mostly horizontal, the vertical tree is too a contrast itself. Very well done, Fiona. Bonjour Fiona,
Une menace terrible plane au-dessus de cet arbre sous lequel il vaut mieux ne pas se trouver s'il s'agit d'un orage.
Le cadrage est tout bon et les lumières traduisent bien l'ambiance qui règne à ce moment là.
Un PP efficace pour renforcer cette atmosphère.

Good, no Excellent photo. Beautifull compo, great mood. Pressure from dark sky is eminent. Green foreground is good contrast to darknes of sky.

I have an attraction of shots that oozes with mood. This one I really like, it has that brooding looming mood, the day was grey and unco-operative but despite all that it has beauty. Very well done. Congrat....
