Photographer's Note

Brighton's West Pier sadly became a tourist attraction for all the wrong reasons. Up until a few years ago, you could take a trip along a gangway to the rotting and disused structure and wonder at what remained of the Victorian splendour.

However, following a storm in 2002, two fires in 2003 and a further storm in 2004, the majority of the ironwork has given up the ghost.

However, the pier remains one of only two Grade 1 listed piers in the UK and it is now home to the thousands of starlings who nest there every evening.

I took this picture from the pier's rival - The Palace Pier (unofficially renamed Brighton Pier in 2000). In the distance is another well-known structire of the East Sussex coastline, Southwick Power Station.
